PhD research line in Wikipedia and Gender

The UOC PhD School has opened a call for 35 places in the Doctorate in Information Society and Knowledge of the 2019/20 academic year. The places are competitive to cover different lines of research proposed by faculty and research staff at the university. All the proposals received will be followed by a selection process and of these, 11 will be awarded by the UOC and will involve a full-time exclusive dedication. The rest are compatible with other dedications and correspond to the modality of partial (non-exclusive) dedication without remuneration.

One of the lines, «Wikipedia and gender», proposes to conduct a doctorate with a gender perspective and a qualitative approach on Wikipedia. Wikipedia began in 2001 and already contains more than 40 million articles in more than 300 languages. It is the main source of information for many users. But despite being based on neutrality, it is well recognized that there is a bias of gender, both in content (for example in the number of articles on women in relation to men) and in their community (the vast majority of publishers are men), as evidenced by different searches (Lam et al., 2011; Wagner, Graells-Garrido, Garcia, & Menczer, 2016; Ford & Wajcman, 2017). Even the Wikimedia Foundation is aware of it and works there (Gardner, 2011; Wales, 2014).

This aspect of Wikipedia can be investigated from different aspects, through its contents, consumer practices or, as proposed in this research, practices related to production: the creation and edition of its articles.

The proposed line of research is based on an ongoing research that studies the participation of women as editors in Wikipedia in Spanish from a dual perspective (http://openaccess.uoc.edu/webapps/o2/ handle / 10609/86625). On the one hand, with a quantitative approach, we are analyzing their presence and their behavior taking into account the activity logs associated with their profiles. On the other, with a qualitative approach, we are working through interviews with former editors of the Wikipedia to know their subjective experience and try to determine what are the reasons why they do not persist, if they do not do it , in their activity as editors.

Those responsible for this line will value the training and prior knowledge both in relation to the gender perspective and the functioning of the Wikipedia. Depending on their interests and the possibilities of collaboration, people interested in developing their doctorate in this line will have the opportunity to be part of an interdisciplinary research team, with experience in the use of different methodologies, which aims to contribute to the knowledge of the factors related to gender bias in this context.

In order to be able to request the access to the programme it is required you to contact the researchers associated to this research line through the email available on the website of the UOC Doctoral School.
